20/08/2008
The August Pedigree All Breeds Dairy show and sale on Wednesday 20th August 2008 comprised a great variety of Holstein, Jersey and Ayrshire young cows and heifers.
An understandable caution among the buyers, owing to the weather and feed cost in particular meant that the trade was not quite as brisk as the last couple of club sales. Having said every animal was sold, with vendors being sensible with their expectations.
The very best animals of all three breeds sold extremely well, resulting in sixteen making over £2000
In the Holstein section there were half a dozen heifers at 2200gns or more, and these were fairly spread from six different breeders. Top of the pile, at 2350gns was a typically smart, good bodied milky heifer from Messers Mitchell of Drumdeel who now joins the herd of JT Crowther & Son, West Trailtrow, Lockerbie.

A 3400gns Bid for Border & Lakeland Club Sale
Champion, “Nethervalley Rotate Jed Darlene VG85” from Robbie Scott’s highly reflected stock crowned another good day, not just for him and the buyer but for the entire consignment of 130 milking heifer and young cows and the Glenconner youngstock dispersal.
“Darlene”, by Jed from a VG88 Rubens daughter of Kepculloch breeding with a string od classy Excellent dams, including the EX91, 14100kg 4.72%BF Kepculloch Rudolph granddam, attracted much serious interest from breeders. So did all the better heifers in the sale, especially the £3000 Reserve Champion from the Hodgson family’s “Wormanby” herd. As with Champion, this smart 2yr 3month fresh heifer carried a classy pedigree, being from the quality Sher Canadian family. She now joins Messrs Sanderson’s herd near Brampton.
40% of the sale made between £2000 and £3750 with an overall average of £1930, which although down on last month’s sale was an excellent result for a much larger entry. This resulted in a more quality selected trade, with the prices more reflective on the standard of animal. A much better thing, of course, for buyers who, if more commercially orientated were able to get a hold of functional, shorter pedigreed stock at realistic prices. Sellers were properly rewarded with much better prices for their better heifers. Particular interest was a batch of very smart productive heifers, soundly bred from first time consigner Mr Mitchell from Mitchell (Drumdreel) Ltd, Cupar, Fife. These averaged a worthy £1931 with a top of 2700gns with others at 2600 and 2500gns.
Following the club consignment was the Montgomerie family’s highly regarded “Glenconner” youngstock dispersal of 73 heifers, from recently served down to 5 month old calves.
Quite probably, because they are bred from very sound, well bred and managed established Holstein Friesian herd from Ochiltree, Ayrshire, the demand for these followers was excellent. The result; five over 2100gns, and an overall average of £1150.
The top price, just a shade under £3000 (2800gns) was paid by Messrs Stewart, Willoxton, Ayrshire and secured for them a Sandyvalley Onyx sired heifer from the great old established Bonny Betty family, with dams by Mtoto, Integrity, Prelude and Midnight she traces back to the original Stonelaw Friesian bred cow.

BORDER & LAKELAND HOLSTEIN SHOW & SALE
Wednesday 20th February 2008
Sale Report
With sixteen young cows and heifers making over £2000 and an overall average of over £1800
for a 100% sell out the monthly Border & Lakeland Holstein Show & Sale at Borderway was again an tremendous success, and a reflection of the current fierce demand for dairy stock. The overall quality was very good with an abundance of excellent uddered heifers and cows on sale, including several consistant batches from Northern and Scottish breeders, some being new vendors.
More animals with classier pedigrees made a worthy premium too.
The top two prices of 2700gns and 2600gns were for a couple of very smart, well bred heifers from Stephen & Ann Morley of the well respected Petteril Herd, the leading price being for a Miss America by the udder specialist, Ladino Park Talent purchased by A Bargh, Woodclose, Skelton, Penrith and the 2600gns Supreme Champion was also home bred and from the Knowlesmere Jo family, by Canyon Breeze Allen purchased by HF Vance & Co, Low Barledziew, Sorbie, Newton Stewart.
The Reserve Champion, a beautiful Hatsummer heifer from an Igniter by Jed by Skychief bred and sold by Harry Hodgson and family from Wormanby made 2400gns and now joins Messrs Sanderson’s herd at Burtholme.
Amongst the cows, admired particularly was a superb fresh 2nd calver, just one of a dozen excellent animals from Alistair Goldie of Longbridgemuir. She was by a homebred Formation x Mouldyhills Squaw sire and from a female line excelling in production and longevity.
Glyn Lucas, auctioneer commented on the quality of stock forward and felt that buyers and sellers should be equally satisfied.

Sale Report
The monthly Border & Lakeland Pedigree Holstein Show & Sale once again resulted in a very competitive trade for the complete variety of type and pedigrees.
Interestingly the trade for cows was a fair bit stronger than for heifers but this was more a reflection of the quality of each, plus the fact that many of the younger heifers lacked a little condition.
With five animals over 2000gns peaking at 2600gns for the well bred Ingleview Crew Cathy EX90, sired by Olivia Lausan Crew, a Storm by Comestar Lausan Black and out of an EX90 Be-Ware Juror Geno dam. This fresh 3rd calver was Reserve Champion to the very smart fresh heifer shown by Messrs Gaitskell of Highfield, Boustead Hill, and bred by the late Ian Bouch, by Rubens from a commercial type pedigree this Overall Champion made 2050gns to Messrs Stewart, Smallholmburn, Hightae.
Second highest price, 2350gns was a smart Morty daughter from an Excellent Miley Gilbert cow with an exceptional butter fat and protein pedigree, she was from regular top consignors Messrs Hodgson of Wormanby.
All in all it was an exceptional trade but down a little on last month.

The monthly Border & Lakeland Club Sale on Wednesday 12th December 2007 was supported strongly by Pedigree and Commercial buyers fighting for good quality young cows and heifers. The overall quality, with notable exceptions was not quite up to last months very high standard but there were many good uddered milky weaning animals on offer. |
Six made over £2000 including the overall Champion, judged expertly by Andrew Spedding. This very classy, well grown fresh Igniter heifer from a 12,000kg Excellent dam of Holstein Friesian breeding made 2100gns to Messrs Sanderson of Burtholme Farm, Brampton.
The top price and Reserve Champion was a VG 2yr old heifer and one of a very high quality consignment from noted local breeders Harry Hodgson and family. “Wormanby Benson Kathleen was by the homebred Bosside Ruben and Mandrel Peach bull and was knocked down 2300gns to JR Heuchan & Son, Gerranton, Castle Douglas.
Many buyers left at the end of the sale with their requirements unfulfilled, such is the current demand, and the long overdue upturn in dairy farming prospects.

Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show & Sale
The November edition of the Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale was a tremendous event for both sellers and buyers. From Lot 1 until the end, beautiful uddered animals graced the sale ring. Senior Pedigree Auctioneer Mr Edward Brown said “ …in my 20 or so years in the business this was one of the nicest collections of Holsteins ever sold through the club sale, thus reflecting the high average. No less than 10 animals sold to or above 2000gns with an overall average for cows and heifers at £1900.
The show was judged by Mr Robert Hunter from the famous Letterkenny Holstein herd and Clydevalley Jerseys. He placed three very strong classes, with his overall champion going to H. Hodgson, Wormanby Farm, Burgh-by-Sands, for Wormanby Benson Stella. This awesome uddered heifer with an EX91 Luke and a VG Skychief in her pedigree, she sold for 2300gns to Messrs Sanderson, Burtholme Farm, Lanercost, Brampton.
Reserve Champion went to Skirwith Hall Farms, Penrith for Stowbeck Samuelo Rosebowl. This was the first Regancrest Mr Samuelo daughter to sell in milk in the North, she sold for 2500gns to Messrs Marrs & Son, Broomhills, Orton Road, Carlisle.
The Wormanby herd consigned six animals to the sale, and in all probably was the best selection ever sold from this top breeder. Top price of the day came from this exciting group, Wormanby Jurist Mandy a fresh second calver, going back to Elmcroft Matt Mandy EX91, All Britain Intermediate Cow 1988; she sold for 2800gns to Smallthwaite Farms, Smallthwaite House, Calthwaite, Penrith.
Skirwith Hall Farms also had a tremendous consignment, they sold another Samuelo daughter to MJL Simpson & Son, Waingatehead Farm, Kirklinton, Carlisle for 2300gns.
The trade for all types of dairy cattle continue to increase as demand still more than outweighs the supply. There has never been a better time in almost 20 years to sell dairy cattle, worth thinking about if you are going to sell!

The 19th Annual Prize Show & Sale of |
One of the most successful Pedigree Holstein & Friesian Bull Sales in recent memory took place in Borderway Sales Centre on Wednesday 17th October.
Originally the sale was to be the famous Annual Evening Bull Sale but due to the Foot and Mouth fiasco, it had to be rescheduled.
Despite this the sale reached an all time high average of £2700 for bulls sold. This trade further inforces the fact that dairy farmers are going back to the dairy sire due to the lack of availability of dairy replacements.
The show was judged by Mr Jim Currie from the “Carlinside” Herd. He placed Dunnerdale Sergeant first in the Senior bull class and Grand Champion. Sergeant is a son of Hartline Titanic from seven straight generations of Excellent dams from the much sought after Sabrina family. He went on to sell for 4500gns to Messrs Gratton, Warsill Hall, Warsill, Harrogate, and was consigned by WW&D Boow, Corney Hall, Bootle, Millom.
Reserve Champion went to David Rees Farms, Foxes Bank Farm, Hunterston, Nantwich. Dalebank Wood Durham was sired by Sterndale Woodgate from 8 generations of Excellent or VG dams from the heart of the Diane family. This bull sold for 750gns JJ Taylor, High Winnow Farm, Thursby, Carlisle.
Top price in the sale went to Mr I Brockett, Park O’Barnaigh, Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, owner of the much admired Winnoch herd. Winnoch Unique sired by Douneside Avenger and from the heart of the Carette Family that alos sired last years top price at 7700gns. This year however Unique sold for 6000gns to an undisclosed buyer.
Second top price from the same breeder, sold for 5500gns to Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm, Mindrum, Coldstream. This pure British Friesian was also sired by Dounside Avenger and from the Penguin family with 5 generations of Excellent or VG dams.
Also selling at 5500gns was a son of Winnoch Olypian from three Excellent dams from the High producing Rose Marie family. This powerful bull from the Winnoch herd now joins JF Bowe & Sons, Calvo, Silloth, Carlisle.
Mr Brockett set the standard with another bull at 5000gns from the Penguin family and sired by Winnoch Royal Duke, he now joins R Murdoch, Lochwood Farm, Saltcoats, Ayrshire.
Alistair Laird from the Blythbridge Herd sold some top bulls. Top price from Blythbidge was a Titanic son from the All Canadian, All American Merkley Starbuck Whitney family. This bull sold for 3400gns to Greentower Farms, New Greentowers Farm, Cartland, Lanarkshire.
Messrs WJ Armour also had a large consignment of quality bulls that saw very keen bidding. Topping the Annandale Trade was a very classy bull from the Doetje family, backed up by seven generations of Excellent or VG dams with butterfat to 4.63% and protein to 3.58%. Annandale Aspen was sold for 4600gns Messrs Richardson, Low Bank End, Appleby, Cumbria.
The Almond herd owned by P. Rawcliffe, Park Farm, Brydekirk, Annan sold some attractive bulls topping the Almond consignments was a very powerful bull from the Sweet family sired by Ladino Park Talent from 10 generations of Excellent or Very Good dams. This young bull sold for 4000gns to W Meredith, North Tarwathie, Strichen, Aberdeen.
Anyone still looking for a Holstein or Friesian bull should contact the office at Harrison & Hetherington as they always have a large consignment for sale.

Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show & Sale
There was once again a tremendous display of quality Holsteins at the October Border & Lakeland Club Show and Sale at Borderway Sales Centre. There was a one hundred percent clearance resulting in an overall average for cows and heifers sold of £1430.
Judging the show was Jim Currie from “Carlinside” herd in Lanark. Impressed with the high standard and beautiful uddered cattle shown; Mr Currie selected Wolfa Lyster Gala as his overall Champion. She was sired by Tcet Lyster and decends from a family with 7 Generations of Excellent or VG dams. The famous Brynhyfryd Gala family in Wales.
Gala was bred and owned by Messrs M Armstrong from Great Salkeld, Penrith, she went on to sell for the top price of the day at 2,200gns to Messrs Dixon, Beech House, Hayton, Aspatria, Carlisle.
Reserve Champion went to Skirwith Hall Farm with Stowbeck Jackson Clara, a freshly calved cow in her third lactation sired by top type sire Weeton Jackson. She sold for 1480gns and now joins Messrs Hunter, Berrier Head, Berrier, Penrith.
Dalesend Farm had a wonderful consignment of animals, from some of their top families. Dalesend Lettice 71 a Canyon Breeze Allen daughter sold for the second highest price of the day for 1800gns. She now joins the herd of Neil Sanderson.
Wormanby one of Cumbrians leading breeders also had a strong line up of animals. They had their top price at 1700gns for a fresh heifer with a perfect udder. She was purchased by B Williamson, Marsfield Farm, Butterknowle, Bishop Auckland.
The demand for high quality Holstein heifers remains at an all time high and as milk prices continue to increase it may be a wise decision to buy now before heifer prices rise again.

The unfolding depressing news of the latest Foot & Mouth outbreak on Wednesday did nothing to quench the flames of enthusiasm amongst purchasers of dairy cattle at Borderway Mart.
To say the trade was on fire would be an understatement. The combination of milk price rises, the national shortage of dairy animals and the starvation of supply due to the recent movement restrictions, plus quite possibly the anticipation as the news broke during the sale that a future block on movements would be inevitable, contributed to a fearsome demand for milk cows, heifers and followers.
Fortunately the Border & Lakeland Club Sale and Dispersal of the Winterside Herd and the Auchenmalg followers provided buyers with a wonderful opportunity to purchase quality animals, many carrying very useful pedigrees.
The Club Show and Sale saw a 100% sell out to average a record £1612.97. Six fresh heifers made over £2000 with a top of 2,800gns for the Champion, ably selected by judge Andrew Carter from”Gerrard” Holsteins. A daughter of Canyon Breeze Allen from the Roberta family bred and consigned by regular top breeder Robert Hunter of the Letterkenny herd, near Edinburgh.
Featuring in the sale were two choice consignments from Matthew Armours “Annandale” herd, from Moffat and Kenny Robison’s “ “Hebrides” herd from the Isle of Gigha. Both batches featured consistently in the leading prices, as did the regular and respected breeders Messrs Butterfield “Ingleview”, Messrs Wilson “Stowbeck” and Messrs Bryson “Carnduff”.

The demand for decent quality young dairy cows and milking heifers seems to be as strong as ever, possibly stronger.
Although the number catalogued in the monthly Border and Lakeland club show and sale was small (40) the trade was consistently excellent.
The pre sale show attracted a good sample of animals with the heifer class in particular being keenly competitive.
Worthy champion was the beautifully bred 2 ½ year old “Cormick Talent Lausan PI” bred and shown by David McCormick from near Dalbeattie. By Talent from a Gibson her Gdam was a maternal sister to Comestar Stormatic. This sought after “Laurie Shiek” bred heifer combined productivity with poise, style and wearability and sold for 1800gns to Messrs Brough of the Carrock herd near Dalston.
The reserve champion was one of a much admired batch from Kenny Robison’s Hebrides herd. This 90 head herd is one of the few remaining pedigree Holstein herds to be found on the Scottish islands, and after many failed attempts due to gales and ferry cancellations they finally succeeded in getting their heifers down to the sale from the island of Gigha.
